Property insurance claims can be stressful. If you have suffered a loss and aren't familiar with the claims process, it can be helpful to get assistance to make sure you are compensated for the entirety of your loss.
The first step to the insurance claims process is to thoroughly inspect property for damage. Photo documentation and reporting are helpful in determining the next steps. Depending on the cost to repair and the extent of the damage policy holders may elect to file a claim with their insurance carrier.
If the policy holder decides to get insurance involved, the insured would file a claim with their insurance carrier. It is best to note the type of damage, the damage location, the date of loss (when the damage occurred), and weather or not emergency services are required. The insurance company will provide a claim number and schedule an insurance adjustment.
Insurance will schedule an inspection where they send out an insurance adjuster to assess the damage. The insurance adjuster will take photos and document findings. The insurance adjuster turns in a report and estimate to the insurance carrier for review, before they make a coverage decision.
Once insurance has all of the information regarding the claim, they will issue a coverage decision. Usually within a couple weeks. The claim will either be approved or denied.
If the claim is approved the insurance company will send out the initial payment within a couple weeks. If the insured has a mortgage on the property the check may require endorsement. Once the check is fully endorsed the repair process can begin.
If the claim is denied the insurance company will send out a letter with their findings and reason for denial. This letter will have the insureds rights under the policy and highlight options to move forward. If the policyholder wants to pursue the claim further it is best to get a third party involved.
Should a third party be required, the insured will need to elect a Public Adjuster and or Attorney, each has advantages and disadvantages. Culver Consulting will work with the insured to determine which option would be best given the specifics of the claim.
